By now you may have already sat in on a welcome presentation from the Careers Service; have heard about Careerslink (where we display all our jobs and events) and perhaps even picked up a free Careers Service bus pass holder or keyring! WorldBlu Live! is the conference you do NOT want to miss - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog If you go to only one business conference this year, make it the WorldBlu Live conference on May 15 and 16 in Denver. I have been to all the previous ones, they always knock my socks off and this one promises to be absolutely amazing and inspiring again. The theme for the event is democracy at work, ie. how do you create workplaces that are based on freedom rather than on command and control and I am among the speakers at this years event. There are two reasons why this interests me: First of all, my company (Woohoo inc.) is run democratically. I can truly imagine no other way to do it. Secondly, democratic workplaces are happier workplaces. When you grant employees trust, autonomy and freedom to make decisions, there is a much bigger chance that they will be happy at work. How to work well with Millennials - Is there a generational, workforce clash in the making? Recently, MTV conducted a No Collar Workers study of Generation Y, also known as Millennials (born between 1981-2000). And the studys results may make some older workers hair stand on end. For example: 92 percent of those surveyed feel their company is lucky to have them. And 76 percent of Millennials think their boss could learn a lot from them. Based on these results, it might be easy for readers to interpret younger workers attitudes as egotistical and self-important. Is this a recipe for conflict in the workplace? It could be. A recent Time article reports there are approximately 80 million Millennials, between 44 and 50 million Generation Xers (those born between 1965 and 1980), and 76 million baby boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964). Also, Approximately 10,000 Millennials turn 21 every day in America, and by the year 2025, three out of every four workers globally will be Gen Y. So, can we all get along at work? Charles Purdy, senior editor for Monster Worldwide has studied inter-generational conflicts and thinks its possible to leverage Gen Y workers attitudes for positive results. He suggests the following to careerists who are working with the youngest members of the workforce: 1. Create a transparent work environment. Purdy explains, Information builds trust, community, and a shared feeling of purpose. Retaining these workers requires engaging them. Gen Y feels engaged when they know why. When appropriate, make data available for all employees to see. When people know the score, they feel trusted. Purdy quotes Brad Karsh, president of the workplace training company JB Training Solutions, when he says: Millennials have been taught to ask Why? So we will give them an assignment that maybe isnt the most glamorous assignment in the world. Well say, Go pull numbers for the spreadsheet, and they will say, Why? Now older generations, when they hear that,they think, How dare you? I am your boss. Because I said so. The reason Millennials are asking that is they legitimately want to know Why?' 2. Turn away from a time clock evaluation calendar and take the focus off of hierarchical structures. Instead, create a motivating environment where performance is related to concrete goals and projects. Purdy notes, Millennials dont go about their work in ways that are intended to get them to the next rung of the corporate ladder or win them favor with their bosses. They prefer to get involved in projects and initiatives that fascinate them, that they consider worthwhile, and that they see as useful to the world at large. 3. Recognize star performers publicly, and tie their great performance to the success of the organization. 4. Teach them. 5. Ask frequent questions and wear authority lightly. 6. Invite interaction with members at all levels of the organizations. 7. Offer opportunities for Gen Y workers to start making decisions immediately. 8. Give them some attention. 9. Emphasize long-term rewards, and set an example. 10. Use social media as a way to sell your company as an awesome place to work. 5 Ways to Get a Big Raise Now All signs point to a rapidly improving job market, giving workers the upper hand over employers when it comes to getting a decent pay increase. âThe economy is heating up, and employment is improving. Employees should have more leverage and more confidence to ask for more,â says Bill Driscoll of staffing firm Accountemps. Itâs about time. While pay increases have steadily been rising since the end of the recession, the gains have been modest. Mercer is projecting an average pay raise of 3% for workers in 2015. Thatâs up from 2.9% this year, 2.8% in 2013 and 2.7% in 2012. But for top performing and highly skilled workers, the pay bumps are much plumper. Mercerâs survey shows the highest-performing employees received average base pay increases of 4.8% in 2014 compared with 2.6% for average performers and 0.1% for the lowest performers. âDifferentiating salary increases based on performance has become the norm,â according to Rebecca Adractas, a principal in Mercerâs Rewards consulting business. âItâs an effective way for employers to recognize top performers without increasing budgets dramatically.â Here are five ways you can snag a better-than-average raise. 1. Gather your accolades. You know youâre good at what you do, but when clients, customers and respected colleagues say so, that carries weight with higher-ups. Collect emails of praise from your boss, ask customers or clients to write testimonials for your work, and get feedback from your manager after completing projects. 2. Prove youâre a top performer. Thereâs nothing like a number to show you are delivering on the job. Quantify your accomplishments. Sure, thatâs easier if youâre in sales and you can show youâve more than hit your targets or landed a big account. Did you implement more efficient ways to get things done, cut costs to meet budgets, take on additional responsibilities above and beyond your normal job duties? Those count too. 3. Know what to ask for. Are other people at your firm getting raises? How is your company doing? Is it hiring people or laying them off? Even companies cutting back donât want to lose experienced employees. That doesnât mean youâll get a raise, but it will help if your request is grounded in reality. Itâs also important to know how you stack up against others in your position. If youâve been at your company a long time, you may not be making as much as recent hires. Use tools such as PayScale.comâs salary calculator to research compensation by experience level, company size, and the city where you work. You can also talk to colleagues or even co-workers who have recently left your company about how much people make in your position. Itâs still taboo to talk about salary, but if you ask for ranges, itâll be an easier discussion to have. 4. Ask. Seems like the obvious place to start, but 56% of workers have never asked for a raise, according to a recent CareerBuilder survey. Sure, it can be an uncomfortable conversation, but this stat from the survey should give you courage: Two-thirds of workers who asked for a raise received one. And now is a good time to have the conversation. Companies draw up their budgets for the next year in the fall, beginning in September. Wait till December to talk with your boss and it may be too late. 5. Donât take no for an answer. If your manager isnât willing to give you the pay bump youâre looking for, ask what you can do to get it down the road. Take notes and set a time to follow up. After the meeting, send an email thanking your boss for talking with you and summarize what you discussed so you have in writing what was laid out. If a bigger than average pay increase isnât in the cards because budgets are tight, consider other perks that youâd value. âSmart companies are retaining their talent in a myriad of ways besides salary increases,â says Driscoll. That includes one-time bonuses, working a flexible schedule, additional vacation days, telecommuting, covering more of the cost of health benefits, a richer 401(k) contribution, even cell phone reimbursement. âThere are other ways to increase your salary without getting a pay raise,â he says.
